More views of the breastworks and trenches put up by the Confederate
forces in 1864.

The Confederate positions are on high ground.  They look down on
open fields where the Federal troops were advancing toward them.

The Federals had to cross the open field and a creek under intense fire
from the Confederate infantry and artillery in positions like these.

Then they had to scale the slope of the high ground and take these positions
with bayonets mounted.

William Shore's division commander, Maj. General Cox in his official report,
stated that two brigades (including William's brigade) took the positions
and drove the Confederate forces 250 yards back from them.

These pictures were taken in 2005.

Note:  Some of these photos are very large.  They might take some time to download.

In 1864 the trenches and breastworks were shoulder high.
Now after 141 years, they are gradually filling in with silt and leaves.
