William Thomas Shore
Here is William Thomas Shore in a later photograph. The date is uncertain, but is probably around 1890. By then he was father to two living sons: Albertus Shore and Jesse Shore, by his second wife Ianthe (Talbott) Shore. A daughter by his first wife Cora (Dick) Shore died in infancy, and his young son by her died in 1871. His first wife Cora died at age 18, and his second wife Ianthe died at age 23. In William's lifetime he buried two of his children and both of his young wives. William Thomas Shore died in 1898 from a lingering illness he had contracted during his service in the Civil War. He had been granted a medical pension for it, but the illness was not curable. Here is the Back of this photograph. The handwriting is of his son, Jesse Perry Shore (1877-1950). Source: Tom |

On top of the New Kaijo building. To the left, the building in the distance is the Imperial Palace, and the tower behind it is for the NHK broadcast service (now called the "Tokyo Tower"). Here is a photo of the building. Joe worked at the radio station on the top floor. He built and installed the 4-element beam antenna atop the tower on the roof. It's pointing to the United States ("Stateside") where most of the radio messages were sent. Here is a photo of the Tokyo Marunouchi area. The arrow points to the roof of the building where Joe was standing. Here are two photos of the area around the building in September 1945, one month after the end of World War II. Photos 1 2 Here is a modern photo taken in 2014. The old 8-floor building has been replaced by a new 15-floor one. The historic building across the street was nearly 100 years old, and had survived Tokyo's earthquakes as well as bombings during World War II. In 2017 it was demolished to make way for new construction. Source: Joe |
